Helius Energy secures Stallingborough development site

Helius Energy has secured 36 hectares of development land at Stallingborough on the south side of the Humber estuary which, subject to the appropriate planning permissions, will be use to develop a renewable electricity power station.

Helius Energy, the North East based biomass to green-energy company, is proposing to develop and operate a state-of-the-art purpose built 65MWe biomass fired power station on the site. The facility would be the first biomass unit of this scale in the UK, and would be fuelled using a range of readily available biomass feed stocks to produce green electricity. The site also allows for the co-location of renewable vehicle fuel companies for which biomass energy provides an opportunity for further reduced carbon footprint.

John Seed, Chief Executive of Helius Energy, said: "This project sets a new agenda for the production of biomass power. Up until now energy from biomass in the UK has principally come from the co-firing of biomass feedstock in traditional fossil fuel power stations. This is technically challenging and can cause operational efficiency losses. The operation at Stallingborough will be a dedicated facility, designed and developed to use biomass feed stocks, producing renewable energy and tackling climate change on a meaningful scale. We believe that biomass has a very important role to play in the UK’s greenhouse gas reduction programme."

The Stallingborough site provides Helius Energy with the right mix of location and markets. It has good transport links, access to a variety of feed stocks, local and imported, and customers for the energy produced. All developments on the site will be subject to relevant planning and operational permissions.

"Renewable energy will become increasingly important as fossil fuel costs rise and more emphasis is placed on climate change. The plant we are planning at Stallingborough will take biomass power production into a new era." added Mr Seed.
